Ask Kubexy for a command
Describe what you want in plain English and Kubexy turns it into one shell command, ready on your prompt for you to check before it runs.
Open the command bar
Click into a terminal and press ⌘⇧K on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+K on Windows and Linux. A bar opens at the bottom of that pane.
- ⌘K / Ctrl+K stays the Kubexy chat, and plain Ctrl+K inside a shell still belongs to the shell.
- In a full-screen program such as
vim, lessortop, the shortcut goes to the program instead.
Ask
Type a request, for example "find files over 1GB modified this week", and press Enter. Kubexy answers with:
- the command
- a one-line explanation
- a risk rating: Safe, Caution (changes files, processes or packages, or needs
sudo) or Dangerous (deletes data, wipes disks, drops databases, force-pushes, deletes Kubernetes resources, and similar)
Kubexer also checks the command itself and shows whichever rating is stricter, Kubexy's or its own.
Use the answer
| Action | Key | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Insert | Enter | Puts the command on the prompt without running it. Review it, then press Enter in the terminal. |
| Run | ⌘Enter / Ctrl+Enter | Runs it straight away. Not available for commands rated Dangerous. |
| Copy | Copies the command. |
To change the answer, type a follow-up in the bar, for example "only in /var/log", and press Enter. Kubexy remembers the last few rounds. Esc closes the bar and returns you to the terminal.
In an empty bar, ↑ recalls your recent requests.
What Kubexy sees
Kubexy gets the request plus where the command will run: the operating system (and Linux distribution, once Kubexer has detected it), the shell, whether the session is local or SSH, the current folder for local shells, and your last few commands. Obvious secrets such as passwords, tokens and keys are masked before anything is sent. Host names, addresses and credentials are never included.
Good to know
- The command goes only to the pane you opened the bar in, even when broadcast input is on.
- The command bar is part of Kubexy, a Pro feature, and uses the provider and API key from Settings → Kubexy. Without them the bar links you there.
