Kubexy in the terminal

Kubexy is the AI assistant built into Kubexer Terminal. Ask it about what's on your screen, get the command you need, or hand it a task and let it work in a terminal tab. You bring your own API key, and it's used directly from this computer.

Set it up

  1. Open Settings → Kubexy.
  2. Pick a Provider: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or OpenAI-compatible for services such as Ollama Cloud or OpenRouter. For OpenAI-compatible, set the Base URL, including /v1, for example https://ollama.com/v1.
  3. Optionally set a Model. Leave it empty for the provider's default.
  4. Paste your API Key, click Save, then Test.

The key is encrypted with your operating system's secure storage. It stays on this computer and is never synced or sent to Kubexer's servers.

Chat about your terminal

Click Ask Kubexy in the terminal header, or press ⌘K / Ctrl+K on the terminal page. A panel opens beside the terminal.

  • Pick the terminal it should look at from the list at the top. Kubexy reads that session's recent output for context.
  • Ask in plain language: "why did this fail?", "how do I find what's using port 8080?".
  • Suggested commands appear as blocks with Copy and Run. Kubexy never runs anything on its own in the chat: Run sends the command to the attached terminal only when you click it.
  • New chat starts over.

From a command's output you can also choose Ask Kubexy about this output (click the command's bar in the margin). See Command blocks.

Quick helpers

  • Command bar: press ⌘⇧K / Ctrl+Shift+K in a terminal, describe what you want, and get one command on your prompt to review. See Ask Kubexy for a command.
  • Explain a failed command: hover a failed command and click ✨ Explain for what went wrong and how to fix it. See Explain a failed command.

Agent mode

Agent mode lets Kubexy carry out a task in the terminal: run a command, read the result, and decide the next step. Press ⌘I / Ctrl+I, or click the mode label in the terminal's top-right corner, to cycle through:

  • Terminal Mode — normal typing; no agent.
  • Agent Mode: Normal — Kubexy proposes each command and waits. Edit it if you like, then Run or Skip.
  • Agent Mode: Auto — Kubexy runs its commands straight away.

Type the task in the box at the bottom of the terminal. While a command runs you can watch it and click into the terminal to interact. Ctrl-C there stops the command, and Stop ends Kubexy's run.

The token counter shows how much the session has used. Click it to compact the conversation and lower the cost of later turns.

Good to know

  • Use Auto only where a mistaken command can't do damage.
  • Kubexy is a Pro feature. Your AI provider bills you for the tokens you use.
  • Kubexy works the same over SSH and in local shells.
