Export a recording as video

Turn a recording into a video file you can drop into a pull request, a bug report, documentation or a demo. Rendering happens on this computer, faster than real time, and nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Open Session Recordings, then click Export video (MP4)… on a recording's row, or Export video… in the player.
  2. Choose the options below.
  3. Click Export… and wait while the frames render. The dialog shows the frame count and progress. Cancel stops cleanly, and nothing is saved.
  4. When it's done, the dialog shows the size, resolution and length. Click Save… to choose where to put the file, or Discard.

Keep the window open while it renders: rendering pauses while the window is minimized.

Options

Option Choices
Format MP4 (auto) — H.264, plays everywhere; falls back to WebM if this computer can't encode H.264. WebM — VP9 or VP8.
Resolution Recording size, 720p or 1080p (the default).
Frame rate 30 fps or 60 fps.
Speed 1×, 2× or 4×.
Skip idle Shortens every pause to at most 1 second, like the player.
Range Whole recording, or Part of it: enter start and end times, or pick Start at a command… / Through a command….

Range times count from the start of the recording, as it really passed, including idle time. The dialog shows the codec it will use and the resulting video length before you start.

The watermark

Every video carries a Kubexer Terminal watermark in a strip across the top of the frame, right-aligned: a short "Generated with Kubexer Terminal" note with kubexer.com/terminal, the app's logo and the Kubexer wordmark. The same note is written into the file's metadata. The strip sits above the terminal, never over it, and below a margin kept clear for video players' controls. The dialog shows a preview.

Limits

  • Video export needs WebCodecs support in the app's renderer. If no encoder on this computer accepts the chosen size and frame rate, the dialog says so. Try a lower resolution or 30 fps.
  • If H.264 isn't available, the video is saved as WebM (VP9). It plays in browsers, VLC and most chat apps; QuickTime needs a converter.

Other formats

Export .cast saves an asciinema file instead: tiny, text-based, and playable with asciinema play or the asciinema web player.
