Recording settings & retention

Control what gets recorded automatically, and how long recordings are kept. Open Settings → Terminal → Session recording.

Record local shells

Record local shells starts recording every new terminal on this computer. Shells that are already open aren't affected.

To record an SSH host every time, turn on Record sessions in that host's settings instead. See Session recording.

Retention

Recordings are cleaned up in a pass that runs when the app starts and then every hour.

Setting Default Allowed
Keep recordings for 30 days 1–3650 days
Maximum total size 2048 MB 64–102400 MB
  • Finished recordings older than Keep recordings for are deleted in the next pass.
  • When recordings use more disk space than Maximum total size, the oldest finished ones are deleted in the next pass, until they fit.
  • Recordings still in progress are never removed by cleanup.

Lowering a limit doesn't delete anything on the spot; it takes effect in the next pass.

These settings apply to this computer only. Recordings are never synced.

Privacy

  • Recordings are stored encrypted on this computer, each with its own key.
  • Keystrokes aren't recorded, but everything printed is, including any secret a command echoes. Avoid recording sessions where you print secrets, or delete those recordings afterwards.
  • A recording opened from the list can be deleted at any time from its row or the player.

Open your recordings

Open recordings at the bottom of the settings card goes to the recordings list. See Replay a recording.
